ABOUT MUDFIRED

Lauren - The Artist behind Mudfired

I first tried pottery in 2020 after having to pack up my life and move back home to East Sussex. It sounds cliché but from my first lesson, Pottery was the thing that I didn’t realise I needed during a very uncertain and scary time. I found a huge amount of peace and clarity in using my hands as tools. In the past I had kept my ADHD a secret and desperately masked the symptoms to fit into society. For the first time I allowed myself to jump from project to project without self judgement. In a way that channels my energy into something that feels healing in the process. To have a product at the end is a bonus. I accept that my process isn’t for everybody, and thats why they sell ceramics in B&M.

The Product - Mudfired by Lauren

The pieces are mainly handbuilt mixed with occasional thrown items. For my decoration heavy pieces the base may be slip casted.

The clay bodies I use are white stonewares because of their durability but currently my love for large Terracotta vases is rapidly growing. The earthier tones give me an organic feel as though am building directly from the earth.

My brand’s ethos is built on gratitude and sustainability, from the solar powered kilns all the way to the brown paper packaging.

To own a piece of handmade pottery is to own a piece of the artists’ hand.

The Process behind Mudfired

Depending on what I am making I will either handbuild or throw. I have always prefered handbuilding because of the methodical and meditative nature of it. The process is longer but I enjoy taking my time over it.

Each piece I build, fuse, mend and fire holds a piece of myself within it. The process starts by creating intention. and each item is made individually. Drying and the first firing in the kiln transform raw materials into durable ceramics. Glazing adds both aesthetic appeal and further functionality. The final firing transforms all elements into a durable, finished piece ready to be carefully picked by you and treasured in your home.
